弟子の頃住んでいた岡山県備前市には、備前焼で栄えた伊部という町があります。その地には南大窯跡と呼ばれる窯跡に、膨大な陶片の山がありました。
時折、そこを訪れては江戸から室町時代に作られた陶片を眺めていました。
技術や素材の分析より何より、古の陶工の生きた痕跡や時代の景色が想像できるようで夢中になったのを覚えています。
私の焼いたこの器も、あるいは陶片という形になってでも数百年後の世に届くかもしれないと思うと、自分が受け取ったバトンを未来に繋げるようでワクワクします。
今の時代の全てがなくなっても焼き物は土や石のように静かに時間を刻み、誰かに届く事を祈っています。

When I was an apprentice I used to live in Bizen, Okayama, a city well known as the center of the Bizenyaki since Muromachi and Edo era.
In Inbe, there was a place called Minamiogamaato where you could see the remains of ancient kilns and a huge hill consisted of ceramic shards from Edo times.
I would often spent much of the time of my day on the hill, looking at the thousands of old broken pottery pieces.
I was in search for the reflections of old landscapes and the traces of labours and lives of pottery workers hundreds of years ago.
I feel excited when I compare my work as a marathon runner carrying a baton received from the past and passing it on to future generations.
Like a piece of rock or a layer of clay, I hope my work will survive a history of time with someone or somewhere to belong even after nothing is left in this world.
