「自己を前に押し出す表現とは、対極の方向へ向かって制作をしてきた」と西村氏は語ります。

今回の展覧会の副題である『Lontano（ロンターノ）』とは、遠くから微かに聞こえる音を示す音楽用語。それは、作家自身の自我を厳かに抑え、徹底的に「物に語らせる」西村陽平の長年の制作スタイルそのものを表しています。

西村陽平の作品は、人間の視覚の先入観を一度引き算し、音、触感、量感といった、目とは別のルートでものを感じることを観るものに気付かせます。
1000度以上の熱で焼成された、かつて誰かが読んでいたであろう古書や、日常の道具たち。激しい炎をくぐり抜け、本来の役割を失って静かに佇むその姿は、積み重なる遠い時間をイメージさせます。

1970年代より、国境を越えて独自の探求を重ねてきた西村陽平の造形思考。物が自ら語り出す微かな声に、ぜひ耳を澄ませにいらしてください。

Nishimura Yohei Solo Exhibition
Lontano — From Afar, From Near

"I have been creating works in a direction entirely polar to that of pushing self-expression to the forefront," says Nishimura.

The subtitle of this exhibition, Lontano, is a musical term indicating a sound heard faintly from afar. It perfectly captures Nishimura Yohei’s lifelong approach to creation—disciplining the ego with a solemn restraint to completely let the materials speak for themselves.

Nishimura’s works prompt viewers to cast aside the preconceptions of human vision and awaken to experiencing objects through alternative pathways—sound, touch, and mass.
Old books once read by someone, or everyday utensils, fired at temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius. Having passed through the intense flames and lost their original roles, their quietly standing forms evoke the imagery of accumulated, distant time.

Having advanced his unique exploration beyond national borders since the 1970s, Nishimura presents a profound sculptural thought. We cordially invite you to come and quietly listen to the faint voices emerging from the materials.
